EnerSolution Inc. has been doing this since before most of the programmes we work with existed, and it has outlasted several of them. That is worth saying because this industry has a short memory and a lot of new entrants: the Canada Greener Homes Grant created thousands of energy advisors in four years and its closure removed a great many of them again. We were here before it and we are here after it.

What the licence actually means

An EnerGuide rating is not something anyone can issue. It requires a registered energy advisor who has passed NRCan's examinations, working under a licensed Service Organization, modelling the building in HOT2000 from measured inputs. The licence, not the individual, is what issues the label — which is the structural reason a programme accepts our file and not a home inspection report, however competent the inspector.

Ours is Organization Licence Number 9E. NRCan is not currently accepting applications for new Service Organization licences at all, in either the EnerGuide Rating System or ENERGY STAR for New Homes, on the basis that there are enough to meet demand. So the licence is not merely a credential now; it is a closed door that we are already inside.

What we do not do

We sell no insulation, no windows, no heat pumps and no solar. We take no commission on work we recommend and we do not sell your details to anyone who does. If you ask us for a contractor we will give you names from a list we check insurance and registrations for, and we are paid nothing for it.

That is not a virtue claim, it is the mechanism. An assessment is only worth commissioning if the person doing it has no interest in the answer. The moment we sell the remedy, the diagnosis is worth less — to you, and to the programme administrator reading our file.

And what we will tell you that costs us money

Of the twenty-eight programmes we track, six require no energy evaluation at all. Their pages on this site say so plainly, in the same box, in the same place, as the ones that do. The Canada Greener Homes Affordability Program, Oil to Heat Pump Affordability, CleanBC's Energy Savings Program and BC Hydro's rebates are all live, all worth having, and none of them is a reason to hire us.

We would rather lose that booking than take it. A homeowner who buys an evaluation they did not need tells everyone they know, and they are right to.

EnerSolution is the original company in a group that now includes implementation and training arms. We keep the assessment work structurally separate from all of it for the reason above, and we say so here rather than leaving you to find out.
