Solar in Canada in 2026: what is still paid for

Solar has quietly become one of the better-supported measures in Canada while the retrofit grants were closing, and the support is now concentrated in fewer places than it was.

Where the money is

Ontario's Home Renovation Savings pays up to $10,000 for solar with battery storage — the storage is the condition, and it is the part that makes the system useful during an outage as well as on a sunny afternoon. Medicine Hat's HAT Smart covers solar PV within its $5,000 per-home cap. Alberta's CEIP municipalities will finance a system over up to twenty-five years on the property tax bill.

Edmonton's residential solar rebate is fully subscribed and closed. FortisBC's New Home Program pays builders up to $20,000 at Step 5 of the BC Energy Step Code, where solar is frequently part of the route.

The order that matters

Generation added to a leaky building is the most expensive comfort in Canada. Every gigajoule you stop losing is an array you do not have to buy, and the envelope will still be working when the inverter has been replaced twice.

That is not an argument against solar. It is an argument for modelling the house first, which is the only way to know how big the array actually needs to be.

Net zero, and what it takes

A net zero ready home is built efficiently enough that adding generation would take it to net zero. Get the building to that standard and the array is small. Skip it and the array is enormous and the house is still uncomfortable in February.
